1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
I know there will be times in our lives where grief seems to have consumed every aspect of our existence, from the moment you wake up in the morning to the pause at the coffee maker, knowing you only need half a pot, to the silence throughout the evening as you get ready for bed, and the moments when you lie awake unable to sleep in the emptiness they left behind. There will be times when you go to call your mother or father and remember that no one will pick up the phone. There will be times when you want to text your friend about their favorite band playing in concert only to have the message fail to send. There will even be times when you go to wake up your child for school and remember that they've learned all they could from this earth.
But I also know there will be a time when there is no more suffering, no more tears. I know that there will come a time when everyone we have lost only temporarily will be with us for an eternity. I know that when that time comes, all the suffering we have felt here will be meaningless in the joy we are overcome with.
And, until that time comes, we will get through these days. We will survive. And with God's help, we might even thrive. He understands what it is to lose, He lost Adam and Eve to sin, He lost His son for three days following His crucifixion. He understands your grief, and He does not simply say move on, He promises to help us move forward.
